Economy
The broken terrain and unequal distribution of land and wealth have hindered development. Insensitive exploitation by multinationals and corruption of politicians have also helped to keep Honduras poor. Bananas and coffee are the main exports. Unemployment is at 40%. Public dept/person $4,553. Income/person $900 (4.3% of USA).
Location
A mountainous land with rain forests and fertile coastal plains on the Caribbean and Pacific coasts.
Politics
Independent from Spain in 1821, but 134 revolutions by 1932. Military rule for much of this century. Democratic civilian government since 1984. The nation was deeply affected by US preoccupation with the civil wars in neighboring Nicaragua and El Salvador. Since 1990, Honduras has sought to lessen dependence on the USA and implement economic reforms.
Religion
The Roman Catholic Church is officially recognized, but there is separation of Church and State and freedom of religion.
