Official language is Spanish, but only 75% of the population understands Spanish, which is Paraguay's business language. Guarani is the common peoples language spoken by 90% of the population.

Economy

Mainly agricultural. Development hindered by distance from the sea and lack of mineral resources. Public debt/person $417. Incom/person $1,030 (4.9% of USA).

Location

The "landlocked island" of South America.

Politics

Independent from Spain in 1811. Devastating wars with surrounding nations in 1864-70 and 1932-35. Military dictatorship from 1954-89. Since then, economic and democratic reforms have reintegrated Paraguay into the world's political and trade network.

Religion

Complete separation of Church and State and equality before the law of all religious bodies was declared in 1992.
