Economy
One of the world's largest oil producers. Oil wealth has benefited the rich elite at the expense of the poor. Some attempts are being made to diversify the economy. Large-scale corruption, exposed by falling revenues from oil, has created resentment and instability. Unemployment is at 9.6%. Public debt/person $1,305. Income/person $2,450 (11% of USA).
Politics
Independent from Spain as part of Gran Colombia in 1821; and as a separate state in 1830. A succession of revolutions and harsh dictatorships ended in 1958. Stable democracy for 30 years until economic stress and disillusionment with corrupt government provoked a number of civilian riots and political coups which have weakened the government. The ruling party was rejected by the electorate in the December 1992 elections, but the results have been widely disputed.
