Economy
Exploitation of oil and development of industry has benefited the top third of the population, but the poverty o fthe poorer two-thirds has increased. Massive national debt, inflation, and the deepening economic crisis forced the government to face up to the protectionism, unwised investment policies, entrenched sectional interests, unfairness of existing economic structures, rapid population growth, archaic land-tenure systems and blatant corruption. Mexico's economic turnaround has been spectacular since the end of the '80s. Public debt/person $920. Income/person $1,990 (9.4% of USA).
